3 years old!

Anderson on his birthday with his new bike

What a fun week it has been- Anderson is loving life as a three year old!  He really is such a happy (and healthy!) kid, which is all I can ask for.

From the very beginning, Anderson has been especially sweet and affectionate.  He still likes to be held- or "snuggle with mama" a lot.  He still plays with his hair- or mine- especially when he's sleepy.  In some ways I feel like I have this kid all figured out.  I know what foods he will eat (which, thankfully, is a growing list at this point.)  I know when he will nap and about how long he will sleep at night.  I know that timeout will work, eventually, and he'll be ready to talk about "why did we have time out" and get right back to whatever it is he was doing.

But in a lot of ways, Anderson definitely surprises me.  He is the most amazing sponge and is learning so much.  He has always loved books and letters and numbers, and it's amazing to me how much he knows.  His grandparents especially have so much fun teaching him new things- because he loves it, and he will remember.  For instance, lately he's obsessed with onomatopoeias.  At first he just thought it was a funny word to say, but now he will hear, "pow" or "crash" and say, "That's a good onomatopoeia!"  He loves to come up with as many as he can, and (thanks to my dad), usually ends with, "and of course....Bif!"  Ha.  Weird, right?  But so funny.  He also loves totem poles, and he has 5 totem pole figurines he keeps on his dresser and likes to play with.  This all started from his favorite episode of Little Einsteins, but his love for totem poles has continued to grow.

Anderson loves to play with a ball, and he's pretty good at throwing.  His newest skill is catching, which has come a long way in the last couple of weeks!  (His Aunt Casey taught him to follow up a good catch with a touchdown dance.)  His other recent physical milestone is jumping.  He learned to "hop" right around Easter this year.

Anderson also loves instruments and can name and act out a lot of them- trombone and cymbals are his favorites.  He got a xylophone for his birthday, which he is soo excited about.  He likes music parades, especially (a little tricky with a xylophone, but we were making it work.)

He's getting into pretend play lately, too.  He is forever coming up with new names for me.  Some of my favorites are "Mama Wolf" "Firefighter Mama" and "Mamasaurus."  So he is of course, "Ander-wolf-cub" "Firefighter Anderson" or "Andersaurus."  He got a pirate hat, toy parrot and spy glass for his birthday, and he's had fun looking for Captain Hook.

Anderson is really pretty social these days.  He may still be a little slow to warm up, but he really likes to have friends to play with in the cul-de-sac, at the park or Chic-fil-a.  He's gotten really good about playing nicely.  He can be a little bossy, but is usually really sweet to his brother.  They're getting to the age where they like to "wrestle" on a big pile of pillows, which is so fun for me to watch.  We did VBS at church all week, and he had a ball!  He was so good about going up to each of the friends in his class and telling them goodbye, by name, when it was time to go.  I think he will LOVE preschool this fall.

He is stubborn and cautious (probably gets both traits from Ryan and me both).  He still won't go down a slide, and he's perfectly comfortable telling his friends, "No," when they are playing.  Even though he really is normally happy and sweet, he can be a little grump now and then.  For instance, I wanted him to say hello to some ladies this morning and he said, "No- I'm not friendly!  I'm just sad."  Oh geeze.

Needless to say, Ryan and I think he's just the coolest three-year-old little guy.  He makes us laugh and makes us so proud every day.  We love you, sweet Anderson!

Anderson's third birthday party (first friends' party)

Anderson, who once upon a time was shy, loved his birthday party and was very comfortable being the center of attention!  We had friends from church and our neighborhood, plus family, totaling 24 kids plus parents at Romp n' Roll.  There was lots for the kids to do, enough space for us all (barely), and I didn't have to clean or clean up.  Win-win-win.

I thought for sure Anderson would be too nervous to go in the jump house, but he was all excited to go.
Instruments!  The loudest 5 minutes of your life. ;)
This guy- still crawling, mostly (although he's been walking some for over a month now).  And still so cute!

Our theme was all things Eric Carle, which was fun and pretty low-maintenance.  I found a few things to buy (coloring placemats, birthday banner, books), and it was pretty easy to make Eric Carle snacks/ cake.

Hey birthday boy!

Notice my boys' very distinct methods of eating a cupcake.
After snack and cupcakes, more playing...

With love from the Bahamas

It's only Thursday and we have had such a good week so far.  I don't want to fast-forward through these last couple of days, but since in the Bahamas I have time to do things like read, nap, and blog, then blog I will.

First of all, flying here went really well.  We woke up early, early Saturday morning (scooped the boys out of their cribs at 3:30) to drive to the Richmond airport with my mom and dad.  The boys were both sleepy but happy and didn't sleep on the ride like I had thought.  Our short flight to Philadelphia took off some time around 5:30.  Brady slept the full 35 minutes and Anderson sat talking happily to his daddy.  We had a 3 hour layover in Philadelphia.  Luckily there was a cute play area for kids, so we were all happy to eat some breakfast and watch the boys play.  The flight to Freeport was about 3 hours long.  This time Anderson slept the whole way; Brady tried to, but he was more restless.  I ended up holding him for the majority of the flight.  Lots of good snuggles.  We arrived in the Bahamas a little after 1.  All in all a great travel day.  However, I said numerous times, "I don't know how anyone can travel with kids by themself!" (Looking at you, super mama Sarah Casson!)

We've had a few sick puppies.  Brady was fighting a cold the first half of the week.  Wednesday the cold hit Anderson pretty hard, but he's already bouncing back today.  Both boys spent one night in the bed with either us or me, which is really unusual.  With that said, they've both really enjoyed the Bahamas, especially Anderson!  Now that Brady's feeling more like himself, I'm hoping he'll really have fun these last couple of days.

The boys have had a lot of fun floating around in the pool.  We brought several floatie toys, like these...

Anderson has done great floating around in this ring.  He kicks to "swim" and is so much more fearless in the pool than last year!

Not that I'm complaining, you'll notice that there are no other people around in most of these pictures.  This week more than ever before (our first time to come in June), we've pretty much had the place to ourselves.  Apparently all 10 units are rented this week (we're in 2), and we see some people now and then, but nobody's out enjoying the beautiful pool and ocean nearly as much as we are.  Either that or the "older crowd" this week is just avoiding the toddlers.  Either way, works for us!

The ocean is just ideal for the boys.  It is sooo shallow, especially during low-tide.  They can just sit and splash.  And the rocks that have kind of annoyed me in years past (no fun to accidentally step on them when you're trying to get out to the water) have entertained the boys to no end.  We've found treasures, admired, observed, stacked, and thrown the rocks for hours and hours this week.  I love the rocks.

This guy woke up extra early most days and tended to wilt an hour or so into the beach.  I think it's mainly because of his cold.  But still lots of smiles!

In our defense, this was only Tuesday.  Picture us with savage tans, now. ;-)

Cheese ball
With the little guys, going out to eat isn't as much fun as staying in.

We did go out to a "fancy restaurant" one night.  Ryan and I got a date night, too (super fun and delicious food!), and we are all planning to go into the resort/ straw market area this evening to look around a grab a quick dinner.  Here are a few pictures of us all cleaned up...

I wanted to try a family picture before dinner.  Always happy to get four smiles!

 After dinner....
At Count Basie Square waiting for some live music.

This little guy made my day by breaking it down on the dance floor... (my usual date isn't willing to dance with me)

So thankful for mostly sunny days, mostly healthy boys, and lots of time to be together!  Here's to two more great days.
