The past few weeks, there has been a theme of "transitions"- most of them having to do with sleep. Now that Colby is 4 months old (!!), we are working towards getting his permanent room ready so that he can sleep in a crib before long. We are taking this step-by-step, which is hopefully wise and not just pulling the bandaid off sloooowly.
Step 1- Anderson is now sleeping in a twin bed (his birthday present). This was easy. He loves his bed, and it's the same amount of freedom as his toddler bed, just more room. Win-win.
|
Side note: I reached out on a neighborhood yardsale FB page looking to buy a twin bed, and someone said they were about to give this to Goodwill and we could just have it. So nice!! It was natural wood, and Ryan and I sanded it, and Ryan painted it. We'll get a different bed for Brady in a year or so and paint it to match.
Step 2- Move Brady into Anderson's room, now "the big boy room". (Big sigh.) This is going well. Mainly. They are very happy about it, so I am very glad about that. And at night we are doing great. The second night Anderson climbed into the crib with Brady. After Ryan and I watched them and laughed at them on the monitor, Ryan went in and put Anderson back in his bed (he said they were both laying down in there by the time he went in). The next morning, Anderson casually mentioned that he climbed in Brady's bed. I said, "Yes, and Daddy helped you back into your own bed so you both could sleep." And Anderson said, "Well, sometimes we sleep together." Ha. Cuties. Also, this morning Brady climbed out of his crib for the first time ever. So that will be interesting...
However, naptime is tricky. Now, Anderson has his quiet time in the loft because he and Brady were laughing, squealing, etc. instead of sleeping during nap times. Anderson kept sneaking back into his room and stirring everything up, so we are working on making this new routine stick. With tutoring and real estate assisting, I really need everyone to have a break in the middle of the day. And days when Anderson doesn't fall asleep during quiet time, he usually dozes off in the evening, so it's still good for him, too.

Brady's new-to-him crib with a transportation theme. He would love to grab those planes and play with them, but he's doing a good job just admiring the flying planes instead.
Step 3- I'm working on getting Brady's old room ready for Colby. We need to better utilize the huge closet in that room, paint, and redecorate. Then we'll move Colby into what will be his room from now on, and we'll move my office stuff back into what is currently Colby's nursery. When we first figured out how we would make 3 boys fit in this house, this final move into his long-term room seemed so far off, and yet here we are getting ready for it.
I would be very happy to skip all of this and keep my tiny baby swaddled up 15 feet away from my bed, but he is not content to stay tiny. And so I've heard, babies don't keep. :'(
About two weeks ago, the big boys had their check-ups. Anderson loved it and was as cute and personable as can be. I never know which way things like that will go, so I was thrilled with such a pleasant visit. They started with an eye exam, and Anderson just loved getting to cover one eye and tell the nurse all of the shapes he saw. For a minute there we were concerned because she pointed to a line and said, "Is this too small?" He said, "Yes," and then told her that the next several lines up were "too small." I said, "But Anderson, what are the pictures?", and he identified them all no problem from all of those lines. I guess he was indicating that they were too small for his
personal preference, even though he could see them. Ha. Also, when Dr. Christian (whom I love- also I taught her daughter in my very first class. Meredith is now going to be a sophomore!) asked Anderson if he liked to eat fruits and vegetables, he said, "No. I like to eat a food that starts with 'S'." And when we asked, he said, "Spaghetti!" Ha. He was full of himself.
His stats: 34 lbs. and 39 3/4". He's dropped from the 78th% for height to 35th%, so she was a little concerned about that. I was surprised, because I feel like he's grown a lot, but according to their measurements, he only grew a little over an inch last year. I'm not sure I'm buying that...

Here he is after watching the Minion movie last week.
Brady was as quintessentially "two" as he could be. The only word he spoke was, "No." Dr. Christian did tickle him a little, so she got to see him smile and giggle. She said he was acting exactly like a two-and-a-half year old should. He was pretty agreeable throughout the appointment, though.
His stats: 33 1/2 lbs. (Almost caught up to his brother!) and 38". He's still around 90th% for both.

Minions, everywhere!
Brady continues to refuse to speak in group settings; it's been over a month now. We're trying not to make it a big deal, and I'm sure he'll grow out of it. But I am always happy to hear him chatting away at home. He is so sweet, but also so stubborn. He gets that from his Dad ;-) (ha).
